The fine late nineteenth century shopfront remains intact with its skilfully carved console brackets and panelled pilasters. Victoria Drummond Tower was built as a Folly Tower in the Victorian period in 1858 by Victor Drummond Delap as part of Monasterboice House & demesne. Hatch’s Castle (10 Mins)



The smaller of two “castles” in the centre of the market town of Ardee, Hatch’s Castle is a fine example of a late 14th Century urban fortified house that was once found in many towns throughout Ireland. Clearly identified by its unusual rounded corners, it’s four storeys are constructed of hammer-dressed masonry in irregular courses that is obscured in places with patches of plasterwork, and is crowned with a wall-walk and battlements. The southeast corner has a projecting turret which houses a spiral stairway to roof level.

TANKARDSTOWN House (10 Mins)



Exuding elegance and luxury, Tankardstown comprises an impressive 18th Century Manor House and Orangery. Tankardstown was formed by land confiscated in the 17th Century. Lands were merged to create demesnes with large houses as the focal point. In 1710, Tankardstown House passed to the Coddington family who lived at Oldbridge House, the battle of the Boyne site. By mid 18th Century, it was owned by Brabazon Morris. Brabazon Morris mortgaged Tankardstown until it was bought out in 1815 by Francis Blackburne, Lord Chancellor of Ireland. Tankardstown continued to be a private family residence until the current owners, the Conroy’s opened their doors to welcome guests into their beautiful home, the rest, as they say….
